Dallas inherits the No.1 pick in the draft and is expected to select Cooper Flagg, the San Antonio Spurs the No.2 pick

The Dallas Mavericks, despite low odds, inherited the first pick in the NBA draft, which will take place on June 25th and 26th, with the San Antonio Spurs obtaining the No. 2 pick in Monday’s lottery. The Texans are expected to strengthen their roster with 18-year-old Cooper Flagg, who is expected to be one of the league’s new stars given his collegiate accomplishments.

The Dallas Mavericks, NBA finalists last season and 10th in the regular season in the West (39 wins – 43 losses), had only a 1.8% chance of obtaining the first pick, according to the NBA’s system, which prioritizes rewarding lower-ranked teams to help them strengthen their roster. But they hit the jackpot in the lottery. All experts agree on the identity of the future No. 1: 18-year-old American center Cooper Flagg, a college basketball star with the Duke Blue Devils last season.

Dallas should therefore land a budding star after shaking up the NBA in February by sending Slovenian Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, notably in exchange for Anthony Davis. Cooper Flagg, if he lands in Texas, could be paired with experienced players Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, in addition to Davis. “I’m looking forward to it,” the college player of the year told ESPN. “I’m an offensive and defensive player, always have been. I’m just going to do my best.” The Spurs Still Lucky

Flagg, an explosive 6’11” center, averaged 19.2 points this season with a multitude of spectacular plays that boosted his stock before his arrival in the major North American league.

Behind Dallas, the San Antonio Spurs continue to get lucky with the second pick in the draft, after the first pick in 2023 to land Victor Wembanyama, then the fourth pick last year to sign the future rookie of the season, Stephon Castle. The Spurs, through trades in previous years, also inherited the 14th pick. Joel Embiid’s Philadelphia 76ers, after a disastrous season, landed the third pick, ahead of the Charlotte Hornets.
