Golden Moment for Tunisia: Ahmed Jaouadi Wins 800m Freestyle in Indonesia!

Singapore, July 30, 2025 At just 20 years old, Ahmed Jaouadi has claimed his first major international title winning the men’s 800 m freestyle gold at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with a stunning time of 7:36.88. This mark stands as the third‑fastest time in history, and sets a new textile-era world record.

In a masterclass of strategy, Jaouadi surged after the halfway point to pull clear of German swimmers Sven Schwarz (silver, 7:39.96) and Lukas Märtens (bronze, 7:40.19). He dedicated his victory to fellow Tunisian champion Ahmed Hafnaoui, who is currently serving a suspension.

🧠 Overcoming Adversity: Mental Health Triumph

Jaouadi revealed that his road to gold came after a difficult period of personal struggle with depression, which led to a hiatus from training until March 2025. His comeback inspired teammates and fans alike . He said:

“The team and staff supported me through everything. I had doubts, but I trusted the process and today it all paid off.”

🎖️ A Rising Star: Jaouadi’s Journey in Numbers

Ahmed Jaouadi has rapidly ascended to the top of African swimming:

  • 2024 Olympic Games (Paris): 4th in 800 m free, 6th in 1500 m free
  • 2024 Short Course Worlds (Budapest): Gold in 1500 m, Bronze in 800 m with an African record of 7:31.93
  • Named Swimming World’s 2024 African Male Swimmer of the Year

His final time of 7:36.88 in Singapore makes him the third-fastest performer ever in textiles, behind only China’s Zhang Lin and Tunisian legend Oussama Mellouli the latter’s mark set during the supersuit era in 2009.

🇹🇳 Tunisia’s Legacy in the Water

Oussama Mellouli: A Pioneer

Widely considered Tunisia’s swimming hero, Oussama Mellouli made history by winning Olympic gold in both the 1500 m pool swim (2008) and the 10 km open water marathon (2012) the only athlete ever to do so at a single Olympic Games.

Ahmed Hafnaoui: The Teenage Sensation

Ahmed Ayoub Hafnaoui, Olympic gold medalist in the 400 m freestyle at Tokyo 2020, represents the next wave. Despite a recent suspension, his prior achievements include world titles in both the 800 m and 1500 m in 2023.

These two legends have paved the way for the likes of Jaouadi, who is now emerging as Tunisia’s next global star. Notably, Reddit fans often reference how Mellouli’s achievements inspired a generation including Hafnaoui and now Jaouadi.

🔍 Looking Ahead

Jaouadi will also compete in the 1500 m freestyle final on August 2 in Singapore. As part of a growing national focus on distance swimming, his success fuels ambition for future titles African Championships, Olympics, and beyond.

For Tunisia, this victory continues a proud tradition of world-class swimmers and signals that the aquatic legacy remains very much alive.
